Revealed by Zoom - Hidden Histories: Enslaved People and Women
(November 5, 2020): PCM creative is providing the Zoom and event production support to The Arkwright Society for their first virtual Industrial Revolution Conference on Saturday 7th November.
#ASIRC20 aka The Arkwright Society’s Industrial Revolution Conference has been running for six years with a diverse range of topics and expert speakers.
For the 2020 event leading experts will talk about the partly ‘hidden histories’ of enslaved peoples and women.
Professor Maxine Berg of Warwick University will look at Slavery and the Wealth of Nations by going back to the Royal African Company in the late 1600s when Edward Colston was a Director of the Royal African Company.
Professor Emma Griffin, University of East Anglia, will introduce us to the real lives of Victorian women workers after men ‘stole’ their work spinning in the mills.
For the first time direct from the University of Sao Paulo, Thales Pereira will describe the role of Brazilian cotton in the Industrial Revolution and the part played by slavery and markets in its supply to the UK mills.
Susanne Seymour, Deputy Director of the Institute for the Study of Slavery at Nottingham University, will talk about The Strutts of Belper, the lead UK supplier of cotton thread in the late 18th/19th centuries. Their cotton was mostly supplied by Thomas Tarleton, a merchant, a slave trader and a slave owner.
Cliff Lea, a Cromford Mills guide, will talk about the Arkwrights who were MPs in the C19th, including one who served in the West Africa Squadron, the British Navy patrol which tried to reduce slave transports after the British Slavery Abolition Act of 1834.
